When most people think of Beauty and the Beast they either think of the 1987 TV series or they think of the Walt Disney’s animated film from 1991. The fairy tale Beauty and the Beast actually goes all the way back to 18th-century France where it was originally written. It was published in 1740 by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.
In the TV series, the story setting was set in modern-day New York City instead of Renaissance France. It starred Linda Hamilton as Catherine (Belle) and Ron Perlman as the Beast (Vincent). This was Perlman’s first leading role.
In 2014, France released a Beauty and the Beast film named La Belle et la Bête which wasn’t released in the United States until 2016.
Then in early spring 2017, Disney released a remake of the same story as the 1991 animated film, starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast, Prince Adams. This latest live-action film version is an adaptation of Disney’s original animated film. Excitement over the release of the film sparked a renewed interest in wearing Beauty and the Beast costumes to cosplay events and for Halloween.
When I first began my search for new Beauty and the Beast costumes, I was totally amazed and how many costumes have been created since the release of the film. Usually, I have to really dig and dig through costume sites to find what I’m looking for and am often disappointed with the cheap, low-quality products I find.
This time I found some really awesome theater quality costumes. My dilemma was in deciding which ones were the best to show you. I found replicated costumes in the style of the 1991 animated film along with costumes inspired by the French La Belle et la Bête 2016 film, and the more recent 2017 film. I am sure you will be pleased with my selections.
The good thing for you is that I waded through tons of costumes before selecting the ones I am featuring. This is saving you a bunch of time because you don’t have to do the searching yourself! Let me tell you, it can get overwhelming. You will feel as if you’re drowning in a sea of yellow gowns.
Now, all you have to do is decide which one you like the best from the ones I picked out to be the best of the lot. 🙂
Belle Everyday Village Costumes

Belle’s everyday outfit in the film has changed since the animated film of 1991. The outfit has more of an 18th-century peasant feel with the use of the skirt overlays but with a modern twist such as the denim bodice.
From the 2017 Disney movie, this villager costume is replicated from the one worn by Emma Watson in the film. It is a wonderful 9-piece costume set that looks almost exactly like the original costume. The tailors have paid close attention to detail with this costume.

All of the costumes from this company are made-to-order. You can choose the standard sizes they have listed, or choose the custom made option. Please take accurate measurements to compare to their sizing chart.
If you want a custom job, send them an email with your measurements plus any other specifications to may want to add onto the costume. They only charge an extra $10. If you have photos of what you want, even better. Send them along because, as I’m sure you know, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Remember to add an inch or two to your measurements. This allows for movement in the costume. The tailors will make the costumes to the exact measurements you send and it will fit like a second layer of skin unless you allow a little extra room to move. You do want to be able to breathe, to raise your arms, to bend over, and to squat (if ordering pants).
Included in this costume set is a white gauze shirt with 3/4 length sleeves; a blue vest with a denim bodice accented with red floral fabric, and with red and white shoulder and side lacings; 2 skirts, 1 white underskirt and 1 blue overskirt; 2 aprons, 1 long blue gingham plaid, and 1 short blue and white stripe; a neck scarf, a necklace; and a red and cream stripe belt bag.
Boots and socks are NOT included. I would wear an old pair of hiking boots with this costume. If you don’t have a pair already, check out your local thrift stores for a scuffed up pair before investing in a new pair.

I also recommend getting a leather skirt hike set so that Belle can hike up her overskirt to expose the underskirt for more of a 1700s look.

This Emma Watson Belle villager costume is a 6-piece costume set. The set includes a shirt, vest, an underskirt, an overskirt, an apron and a bow tie.
The shirt is a white 3/4 length sleeve peasant shirt. The underskirt is blue and white stripes with a wide solid blue waistband. The overskirt is solid blue with a wide blue and white gingham plaid waistband. The vest is solid blue uniform cloth fabric with a square neckline and an attached red floral fabric accent piece. The top of the vest shoulder straps and the sides are laced with red and white stripe lacings.
The apron is a 3-panel piece sewn onto a waistband tie. The long under panel is a long blue and white gingham plaid panel. The short panel is a white, blue, and yellow stripe piece. Also sewn onto the apron is a short red and white stripe panel bag. A blue bow tie is also included to clip in your hair.
Be sure to measure accurately and compare measurements with the vendors chart. Costumes sizes run differently than regular clothing sizes and Chinese sizes tend to run smaller than USA sizes. This costume cannot be custom made. Be careful measure yourself accurately and order the measurements closest to your own.

A replica of the Disney animated film, this Princess Belle villager costume is a 5-piece costume set. It was worn by Belle as a girl who loved to read when in the village.
Included is everything you see in the photo. A long sleeve white blouse, a light blue jumper dress, a white apron, a bow tie, and an underskirt.
Take accurate measurements and compare them to the vendors sizing chart. Do not use the Amazon chart. You can also email them your exact measurements and they will make a custom costume for you for a perfect fit at no extra charge. This is a cheap version of the Belle villager costume. It is meant to be worn as a one-time use Halloween costume. It is definitely NOT a theater-quality costume. It is for the ladies who don’t plan on wearing it repeatly for theater productions, comic con, or other cosplay events.
All the pieces in this acrylic fabric costume are sewn together as a one-piece dress. There is a glittery sheer overlay skirt sewn on top of a sheer underskirt. The underskirt is thin, not as sheer as the overlay skirt, but still thin enough you can see through it when the lighting is behind you. I recommend wearing a slip under the costume. A blue hair clip bow is included with the dress.
You might actually get two seasons uses out of it, but I seriously doubt it. The stitching holding the costume together is iffy. You may be the lucky one who gets the dress which has been sewn together correctly. Then again, you might not be. Just so you know before purchasing, the costume is inexpensive and is not meant to be worn over and over again. It is a Halloween costume and not a cosplay or theater costume. Keeping that in mind, it will look fabulous when worn to a Halloween party!

A fantastic bargain for a 5-piece Princess Belle costume set! Included with the set is the gorgeous 2-piece yellow chiffon dress.
The front sleeveless v-shaped bodice is accented with white chiffon scallop strip overlays which trim the square neckline and shoulder straps. The v-shape is trimmed with golden yellow satin. The back of the dress bodice has the same white chiffon scalloped overlay as the front with golden yellow satin looped lacings. If you gain a few pounds or lose a few pounds it won’t matter with this laced corset-style bodice top.
The full floor-length golden yellow satin underskirt is layered with tiers of yellow chiffon. The tiers are edged with a beautiful gold print decorative design.

This is the only dress I found that was replicated from the movie ad shown above featuring Emma Watson. I didn’t see Emma wearing this dress in the film and I only saw it in a couple of these ads. This has me thinking that the posters and this dress are a bit of a rarity.
The bodice of the dress is fashioned from yellow satin pleats forming a V-shape in the front and satin lacings in the back. with several layers of tulle for the skirt. The back of the dress laces up with satin ties. A beautiful floral lace accent piece wraps around the waist like a belt of delicate flowers. Included with the dress is a pannier which gives the dress the added fullness.
This dress is a made-to-order gown. Be sure to match your measurements to the size chart prior to placing your order. They will also tailor a custom gown to your specific measurements for an extra $10 charge.

Belle Costume Wigs
If you don’t have long brown hair, consider wearing a wig to achieve the complete picture of an authentic Beauty and the Beast Belle. I don’t. I have long blonde hair, so when I need to change the color of my hair, often I’ll wear a wig. Sometimes I use a temporary hair color that washes out after several washes, but if I need a hairstyle that is challenging – I wear a wig. And I say that lightly as I have no hair skills what-so-ever. If I have to do more than a ponytail or a simple braid, I’m hair challenged! LOL. A handsomely made high-quality 5-piece costume replicated from the costume worn by Dan Stevens in the 2017 filming of Beauty and the Beast.The costume includes a white shirt, a jabot, a blue pair of pants, a vest, and a coat.
The white shirt has a double row of delicate lace sewn to the cuffs. The white jabot is a separate piece which buttons behind the neck and has 3-tiers of matching white lace ruffles. The blue vest and coat have gold scroll designs printed down the front, on the pocket flaps of the vest, and the cuffs of the coat. I wish it was at least machine embroidered, but it is not, and guess what? Neither is the original coat in the film. They are printed on too. I was shocked when I made that discovery. Anyway, the last bit of detailing are the decorative gold-tone filigree buttons which are used on the coat, the vest, and the pants.

I am loving the work that went into the embroidery of this Beast jacket with attached faux vest. I am not loving the pants and recommend replacing them with a pair of Renaissance style knee-length trousers. Another thing I like about the jacket is it is padded to give the illusion of a muscular beast. Also included with the costume is a 3-tier lace jabot. The jabot is on the skimpy side. If you sew, add more lace to make it fuller. If you don’t sew, I recommend investing in a higher quality jabot. Essentially what you are paying for with this costume is the jacket. Oh, and by-the-way, the makeup is not included. Duh! Just saying.

This is a beautiful looking costume for the Beast but the pants will need to be altered. They are long in length, not knee-length. Be prepared to reinforce the buttons before wearing as many of the reviewers stated the buttons fell off. Doing this in advance will save you from having to chase after rolling buttons.
This set includes the jacket, vest, pants, a lace trimmed jabot, and a pair of lace trimmed cuffs. A shirt is NOT included.

Starting with the quality of fabric, this Beast Costume is made from uniform cloth which is a durable fabric used in the manufacturing of many school uniforms. It is a poly/blend that is durable and will last through many washings and dry cleanings. The blend can be either cotton, wool, or another synthetic fiber.
Included with this Beast costume is a dark blue coat with contrasting yellow lapels, accented with yellow trim down the front and on the sleeves. Also included is a white shirt with attached jabot, a yellow cumberbund, and a pair of pants. Even though the costume is a very well made costume, I don’t like that the pants are not historically accurate. They look too modern. The trousers should stop at the knees gathered with a banded hem. They didn’t wear long pants in 18th-century France. They wore hose and knee-length breeches.
Unfortunately, all of the costumes replicated from the 1991 animated film come with long pants. I would replace them with a pair of Renaissance breeches for a more accurate costume. It isn’t necessary, just more accurate.

You can order a Beast costume in a ready made size up to a XXL or you can purchase a custom made to order tailored to your specific measurements. Please be sure to measure accurately with a little extra for movement! The costume includes a blue wide cuff long tailed coat with gold brocade lapels and gold trim; a white shirt with double ivory lace ruffle cuffs; a double tier ivory lace ruffle trimmed jabot, a brocade vest, and black pants.
If requesting a custom order, I recommend requesting they shorten the pants to knee-length breeches with a banded hem. Sending them a photo, along with your measurements, of a pair of black French Renaissance pants or photos from the Beauty and the Beast films (see photos below) and Let them know to keep the gold stripe down the sides of the pants.

It’s a little bit shiny and a bit plastic looking (Duh! Because it is plastic), and the outfit isn’t very elaborate but it has everything for the Beast Costume
Included in this set are the mask, blue jacket, white dickie, black pants, and a pair of paw gloves. The mask is molded plastic and an exact replica of the animated Pince Adam as the Beast.
The jacket is a short box-cut, tuxedo style with tails and white ruffles attached at the wrist to the cuffs. It is trimmed with gold piping and gold buttons. It has shiny gold lapels matching the attached gold vest. In addition, it comes with muscles to help you look more beastly. Roar!
The dickie is a substitute jabot that is rather plain, but it does have a little tie pin. The dickey could be swapped out for a better-looking jabot but it will suffice. If you decide you want a fancier lace jabot to make the costume more elaborate it will have to be worn over the dickey as the dickey is part shirt and part jabot. I think the costume might be too hot to wear an actual white shirt under it. I would wear a thin white t-shirt to protect the costume from perspiration.
The black pants have a gold stripe down each leg and you even get a pair of hairy paws! Now, how cool is that?

I highly recommend replacing the horrid boot covers which are included with this inexpensive Gaston plus size costume.
Replace them with a pair of men’s riding boots, which you may already own, or with a pair of Gaston costume boots like the cosplay pair featured on the left.
Boot covers make the costume look cheap and tacky! The costume is already cheap looking enough without needing any more help from the boots to make it look even cheaper.
This costume is not intended for a theater or cosplay event. It is a great costume for a family Halloween night treat-or-treating costume. Also included are the coat, vest, a dickie-jabot, belt, and pants.

You could easily put Gaston’s costume together yourself by pairing a white ruffled long sleeve Renaissance shirt, a pair of black Renaissance breeches, a red velvet vest or doublett, and a big red bow. LeFou also wore tan hose and tan colonial style shoes.
