Ladies-in-waiting to the Royal court began as far back as the late 800 AD, as far as we know, and are still employed to this day by the last remaining monarchies. During the Renaissance periods in Europe, the wives and daughters of the kingdom’s noblemen at court were selected from high-ranking, wealthy noble families (above the rank of earl) employed to wait on the Royal families. They were given the honor to serve the queen as her “ladies-in-waiting” as personal servants in the roles of companions, personal assistants, fashion experts, couriers, servant management, grooming assistants in the privy and any other task the Royals wanted to assign or demand of them.

Serving the queen was an honor that brought influence to her family and good, prestigious marriages to the single daughters at court. The ladies were considered noble companions who, because of their status and nobility, could give wise counsel to a woman of high station who couldn’t otherwise form outside friendships. These women of Court were given the “honor” of serving the Royal families and when selected did not have the right to refuse for fear of dishonoring their family and losing the favor of the King and/or Queen.

If a married noble lady was selected, her husband was also given the option to reside at court. Young, unmarried women often went to court as ladies-in-waiting with the hope of landing a beneficial marriage contract.

Noble lady dresses are ideal to wear to Renaissance Fairs, to cosplay cons, LARP events, theater productions, or to Halloween and Masquerade Costume Balls. You will feel old world elegant wearing any of these gorgeous noble lady gowns!

I have searched through many costumes sites to bring you the finest quality Medieval and Renaissance dresses at the best prices. This will save you an immense amount of time and expense from having to do it yourself. If you are looking for a cheap, off the rack, wear it once, then throw it in the garbage bin, sort of costume you will not find it here.

Renaissance Lady Velvet Dresses

Velvet dresses were worn by the noblewomen chosen to wait on the Royalty in Europe during Medieval and Renaissance eras. In a few of the European realms, color and fabric were mandated by law. The Sumptuary Laws in 14th century England, for example, mandated only Royalty were allowed to wear purple and only Royalty and nobles of a certain rank were allowed to wear scarlet and crimson red. Furthermore, only the wives and daughters of wealthy noblemen could wear velvet. The Royals made sure of the class distinction between the wealthy and the poor was evident for everyone to see.

These gorgeous Medieval Renaissance dresses made by Artemisia Designs are beautifully made from a high-quality stretch velvet, not the cheapy cheap-o panne or crushed velvet. The satin lined sleeves are a coordinating color and the upper arms of the dress sleeves are accented with gold or silver decorative trim. Actually, only the red dress is trimmed with gold. All of the other colors are trimmed in silver.

The skirt is very forgiving as it fans out from the waistline with ample amounts of fabric creating a beautiful drape. However, I still recommend wearing an ankle length petticoat underneath for additional fullness. Additionally, the dresses are available in regular and plus sizes.

Renaissance Lady Sky Blue Velvet and Silver Trim Trumpet Sleeve Gown

Renaissance Lady Sky Blue Velvet and Silver Trim Trumpet Sleeve Panel Skirt Gown - DeluxeAdultCostumes.comRenaissance Lady Sky Blue Velvet and Silver Trim Trumpet Sleeve GownClick Here for Details

A stunning, elegant Renaissance gown made from soft sky blue velvet combined with shimmering silver accents. The gown can be fitted to your figures proportions by the lacings provided on the back.

This gorgeous lady’s dress is accented with silver embroidery & silver beaded lace. The ends of the back lacing ties are finished with silver glass beaded tassels. I think I would add a single layer crinoline under this gown for some added fullness, but I wouldn’t want a lot of extra to ruin the drape of the fabric. I would also add a silver velvet cloak to wear while traveling outside.

Lady’s Renaissance Long Tapered Sleeve
Fleur De Lis Print Dresses

Lady's Renaissance Long Tapered Sleeve Navy and Gold Fleur De Lis Print Dress - DeluxeAdultCostumes.comLady’s Renaissance Long Tapered Sleeve Navy Gold Fleur De Lis Print DressClick Here for Details

The Royalty and nobles of France, during the Renaissance, were the only ones allowed by law to wear clothing made from printed fabrics. If the fabrics were woven with gold or silver thread or printed with gold or silver dyes, only the wealthy could wear clothing made from these types of fabrics. Adding accessories to an otherwise plain, unadorned, simple style will increase the value and rank of the woman wearing the dress.

These dresses are historically correct with back lacings for a perfect fit and sleeves tapering to a point below the wrist to the top of the fingers. The full flared skirts have an abundance of fabric but you still need ankle length crinolines to wear underneath for fullness. The printed fabric is a lightweight cotton-poly blend for easy care.
