Women Medieval Renaissance Plus-Size
Dress & Gown Costumes

Plus Size Renaissance Queen Costume GownI have selected deluxe, high-quality Medieval and Renaissance costume dresses and gowns for the plus size women to wear to her favorite costume event. These are well-made costumes which can be worn to any Renaissance Festival; Halloween party, parade or contest; theater production; or Cosplay, Comic Con, SCA and LARP events. Some of them are made to order which will get you the perfect fit.

It is often difficult to tell when the changeover from the Medieval Era to the Renaissance Era occurred as the fashion styles are very similar. Often people get confused as to any distinction between the two, but there really were two distinctly different time periods.

During this time, at the beginning of the Renaissance Period, the high ranking class of women were still being fairly modest with tastefully low-cut square necklines on the gown’s tight bodices. The necklines were trimmed in lace; expensive, decorative, embroidered trims and braids; and precious jewels. Typically the sleeves of ladies gowns were very wide in a bell cut, trumpet cut or an angel cut. The ladies of the Royal Court often had fur-trimmed sleeves on the gowns they wore to court.

The waistlines of these gowns were usually, but not always dipped slightly in a V shape on the front where the bodice attached to the skirt. The overskirt of the gown was split to show the decorative kirtle, or chemise, underneath. Many modern costumes will have an inset panel to give the illusion of these layers of clothing. The train of the gown was turned up and long in many cases. The more affluent you were the longer the gown. Peasant women wore skirts only as long as the ankles as they were more practical to wear when working at their daily chores.

Playing a role in Queen Elizabeth’s, or King Henry’s Court, dressing up for the Renaissance Faire (or any costumed event for that matter) can be a lot of fun when you have the right period costume to wear. At deluxadultcostumes.com, we understand the allure which comes from both the romance and the fantasy associated with the history and the lore of the Middle Ages as we hold the very same fascination.

Those of us that hold the charm of that era dear to our hearts enjoy finding high-quality costumes which can be tailored exactly to our own specifications whenever it is possible. Well-made Renaissance clothing can be difficult to locate in the USA, especially in plus sizes, which is why it is all the more important to find something you love, that is made to last, as well as having a perfect fit to flatter your figure. I look for costumes that can be tailor-made to your personal specifications and you will find a fine selection of these costumes within these pages.

I have chosen a fabulous collection of plus-size women’s dresses and gowns to be worn by women of all Medieval classes including royalty, noblewomen, and peasant serving wenches. The sizes begin with a 1X and go up to a 4X and sometimes 5X.

Once you have selected your favorite costume, be sure to also have a look at the Renaissance costume accessories and undergarments to complete the look of the costume. Remember that it is the attention to detail that will make or break a fabulous costume and win you the prize money for the best Halloween costume contest.

The sleeves are a beautiful long-lined trumpet cut. The front skirt has attached panel inserts to give the illusion of a brocaded chemise underskirt. English Renaissance
Princess Adult Plus-Size Costume

English Renaissance Princess Adult Plus-Size CostumeEnglish Renaissance Princess Adult Plus-Size CostumeClick for Details on Amazon

A beautiful and very affordable Renaissance princess gown. This gown is not as high a quality as the other dresses featured on this page as it is made of a burgundy penne stretchy crushed velvet and a gold tapestry print polyester instead of satin. However, it is still a cut above the cheap off-the-rack one-time use dresses and it does come with fine detailing. The stretchy fabric does have its plus points as it allows the gown to adjust to your own measurements for a better fit. The puffed paned portions of the sleeves are trimmed with a regal gold lace as is the square neckline. The butterfly portions of the sleeves are hemmed with a gold trim that matches the trim on the “V” portion of the bodice. The gold bodice is accented with a burgundy and gold trim. Included with the costume is a petticoat and a headpiece with gold lace trim and a sheer veil.

Typically, in the 15th-century Europe, a kirtle or cotehardie dress such as this was usually worn under a surcote or a houppelande (see below) by noblewomen who could afford to do so. Often the surcote had large open sleeves lined with satin, trimmed in fur, or decorated with jeweled ribbon.

Plus Size Lady-in-Waiting Maiden Medieval Renaissance Dress Banner Image

Ladies-in-waiting, to the Queen of the Royal Court, were not exactly servants. They were more companions and personal assistants to the Queen. They were usually chosen for this high-ranking and coveted position from families of the nobility. It was considered an honor to be chosen and it put noblewomen into position to receive favors for their families from the Queen and King. The women had to be well-groomed and well dressed, although not as opulently as the Queen.

I love the stunning contrast of the satin-lined inside tippets of the butterfly sleeves against the vibrant color of the rich velvet gowns. The fabric gives such an elegant look with its simple figure-flattering 14th-century design. It is a perfect dress for a lady-in-waiting or a maiden to wear to court. As you walk into a room dressed in this gown, all eyes will be on you. I would accessorize the dress with a medieval-style silver metal chain belt or an embroidered fabric belt hanging down from the hips in a V shape and with a dazzling jeweled necklace. I recommend adding a matching velvet and satin-lined hooded cloak to complete the outfit. It is also available in 4 more colors.

Just like the previous dress, another stunning example of a Renaissance lady’s gown inspired by the dresses worn in the late 14th-century. This one is a dark green poly-velvet with the tippets of the butterfly sleeves lined with silver satin. The dress is accented with silver ribbon trim on the arms and silver cord lacings on the back of the dress. I would accessorize with a medieval-style silver metal chain belt or an embroidered dark green and silver embroidered fabric belt hanging down from the hips in a V shape and an emerald green necklace.

All of the gorgeous dresses made by CosplayDiy featured next can be tailor-made to your specific measurements at no addition charge. If you order special sizing rather than the ready-made standard sizes, then please remember to allow extra time for the sewing and shipping, prior to the event. The standard plus sizes are a 2XL, 3XL, and 4XL with an occasional 5XL. All the dresses are made from quality fabric which makes for easier laundry care, however, with the detailing involved with the dressmaking, I would not wash them in a washing machine. I recommend sending them out to the dry cleaners.

These two dresses are typical of a noble woman’s traveling outfit. They are made from rich green satin with an attached hood and long trumpet sleeves accented with brocaded arm bands to match the brocaded bodices. The hoods were there to protect a lady’s face from the outside elements. Women wore this style of dress when traveling on horseback or riding in a carriage. This dress can be custom made to your exact measurements for a perfect fit. The front lacings allow further adjustment for your comfort. Remember to allow enough time prior to your event for the actual sewing and shipping time.

Medieval Renaissance Peasant Serving Wench Dresses Banner Image

Typically, clothing worn by the lower class peasants during the Renaissance was loose-fitting earthy colors. The clothing needed to be loose and comfortable so as not to restrict their movement while involved in their daily manual labor. The peasant costumes of today don’t usually reflect this accurately as the colors are often bold and the costumes fit tighter than they would have during the Middle Ages.

These fabulous overdresses worn by the peasant women are perfect to wear if playing the part of a milkmaid, a tavern serving wench, or a farmer’s wife selling her goods at the fair. The bodices of the overdress lace up the front are trimmed with decorative embroidered ribbon. Decorative ribbon was usually reserved for middle-class or higher-ranking women’s clothing because they were too expensive for the peasants. The shoulder ties and the front lacings make the overdresses adjustable for a more personalized fit. The overdresses are worn over chemise smocks which are included. The overdress is available in 20 different solid colors, however, they only have 1 Scottish Tartan (shown above).

Lagenlook is German for “layered look”. It has been a popular way of dressing in Europe since the Middle Ages. I find it amazing how a style can carry-on for centuries. This lagenlook peasant dress is available in emerald green (shown), dark khaki (shown), and blue. It is a comfortable peasant dress with layered skirts and whose style is very forgiving. The elastic in the empire waist will adjust to your body and it also has a drawstring for a little extra pull. The sleeves are also elasticized for adjustments. The elastic in the neckline allows it to be worn on or off the shoulders and the elastic in the sleeves allows you to puff it up if you like. The crinkled rayon fabric gives it a nice drape that flows when you walk. It can be worn as is, but I recommend a cute underbust corset, bodice, or waist cincher with lacings to wear over it for that added bit of detailing and a completely different style.

There you have it. A fabulous selection of Plus Size Medieval & Renaissance Dress Costumes.

Keep in mind there are only three really important things to remember when searching for the right Plus Size Medieval Renaissance Dress Costume to wear to your Renaissance event….

Keep Calm, Have Fun, and Enjoy the Hunt!
