Men’s Medieval Noblemen Tunic Costume Shirts

Tunics were the most common piece of clothing worn by men during Medieval times. The length of the tunic usually ended between the hip and the knee and had either long or short sleeves.

However, as men’s fashion evolved into the Renaissance era, tunics worn by the wealthy would be either very short, fitted at the waist with the length ending just below the waistline. This type of tunic, called a doublet, had padded shoulders and was more like a man’s bodice.

The wealthy also wore ankle-length tunics made of expensive fabrics such as velvets and brocades. They were often lined with fur and trimmed with decorative embroidered ribbon, fur, or encrusted with jewels. Long fur-lined tunics or tabards had long hanging sleeves and were worn over cotehardies.

Men’s tunics were worn in several different ways. They were worn loose under warrior armor, over a cotehardie, or alone, tied at the waist with a leather belt, a leather girdle, a decorative fabric belt, or rope. The girdle often held a sword or dagger.

During the Middle Ages, tunics were often worn in several layers with a short sleeve tunic serving as an overgarment. It was worn over a tunic with long sleeves. The sleeves of the undergarment tunic were typically long and close-fitting. When men were working, the excess material was pushed or rolled up the arm from the wrist to the elbow to form rolls of fabric as seen in the photo at the top of the page.

The four long sleeve cotton tunics featured above are available in a total of 7 different contrasting color combinations. They are made in Turkey from cotton with the look of light-weight linen. They are a great value for the money. They are very affordable tunics and they have gotten positive reviews from participants in LARP and reenactment events.

Unfortunately, they do run a bit small. I recommend ordering at least one size up. The cotton will shrink a tad if thrown in the drier, so I recommend washing in cold water on a gentle cycle and hanging to dry.

Men’s Medieval Richly Embroidered Flowers Linen Smock

Traditionally, smocks were worn by Medieval peasant farmers, shepherds, blacksmiths, and other village peasant workers for their comfort and ease of movement. However, with the elaborate flower embroidery down the chest and sleeves of this linen shirt, it could only be afforded by upper-class men.

The high ruff style collar and ruffle sleeves add to the Medieval charm of this nobleman’s smock, while the gathers and side slits add easy to wear comfort.

Adult Medieval Sleeveless Tabard Tunics

Another style of tunic, during the 12th century, was called a tabard or a surcoat. Some were tailored to a close fitting while others were made with two loose front and back panels. The tabards were constructed of two styles. One slyle was sleeveless, with a slit in front from the upper thigh level to the hem of the garment forming open panels. Another style came with a solid front and back panel, ankle-length, with open sides.

With a keyhole neckline and side slits, this soft linen tunic overgarment is a functional accessory for many different pre-Renaissance costumes. It can be worn to a Renaissance Festival as a peasant, or in a Christmas nativity pageant as Joseph. Wear it to a Pirate Fest with a pair of billowy pants, pirate boots, and an extra wide sash, or as part of a Steampunk costume. You can dress it up or dress it down. Wear it alone or over a long sleeve undergarment tunic. You get the idea. It is a versatile piece that deserves a permanent spot in your costume wardrobe.

Men’s Medieval Undergarment Tunics

As already mentioned previously, some tunics were worn as undergarments. Often they were long sleeve tunics worn under short sleeve tunics for warmth. They were also worn alone when extra warmth wasn’t needed. Wear them however you like. Leave them loose, layer them, or you can add a sash or a leather girdle belt. Decorate your costume tunics anyway you like. During the Middle Ages these types of tunic garments were called kirtles. Many times these garments get mislabled as surcoats. Surcoats are the sleeveless garments that are worn over armor or kirtles.

Belts and headwear are NOT included with these two button down undergarment tunics. Actually, these versatile tunics can be worn both under and over another tunic garment. They are made of cotton and can be worn repeatedly for reenactment events, Renaissance Faires, LARP or RPG events. Pick an era from the Dark Ages up to the 15th-century and these tunics are an ideal choice.

I do recommend washing the first time in cold water on a gentle cycle to prevent shrinkage and color bleeding. Damp dry in the dryer then hang to complete drying.

In all time periods from Biblical times up to the 15th century, men wore tunics or other drapes of fabric. In the 15th-century men’s tunics became much shorter, significantly above the knees up to the hip-length with a tighter fit. Hosery was then worn to cover the legs.

This linen-blend tunic is the perfect men’s garment to wear to your next 1st – 15th-century reenactment event. Wear it alone or girdled to recreate the look of a middle-class gentleman from a past 12th-century lifestyle. The belt and pants are not included with the tunic costume.

Wear it under chainmaile, a tabard, or a sleeveless tunic of a contrasting color for the look of a knight or a nobleman.

Men of upper-class status, or noblemen, were the only ones who could afford to wear decorated tunics. Additionally, they were the only ones to wear ankle-length tunics with tight-fitting sleeves. Tunics made with luxury fabrics and trimmed with embroidery, jewels, or furs were only worn during the Middle Ages by very wealthy high-class noblemen.

A tunic such as this was often accompanied by a bold, heavy chain, jeweled necklace and a richly decorated tabard worn over it.

Men’s King Richard Royal Red Cotton Velvet Tabard

Up until around the latter part of the 15th-century, when men’s fashions were moving to more elaborate outfits, even the Kings of the realms wore tunics. They wore tunics into battle under their breast armor and over their chainmaille.

When not in battle they wore tunics as both undergarments and over-garments. The type of fabric used was occasion appropriate for royalty.

An example is this red cotton velvet tabard featured on the left, inspired by King Richard’s own dark red tabard. It is embellished with a pair of gold rampant lions, emblazoned on the front. The tabard is split in both front and back for easier mounting and riding on horseback.

The tabard is worn over a long-sleeve undergarment tunic (featured above) and a short sleeve chainmaille tunic.

During the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages, noblemen actually did go to war with and for their kings. Only a nobleman could afford to wear such a tunic as this with the decorative trim. More than likely, he would not have worn it into battle. Unlike today, people had fewer articles of clothing. A lord would have more than a peasant and less than a king, but still would not wear something he had to pay for dearly into battle. Take it as you will and wear as you like but this is not the tunic of a warrior. It is the tunic of a nobleman.

Men’s Medieval Renaissance Suede
and Leather Vests

Leather vest were a common staple in the Medieval and Renaissance eras. When an animal was butchered for food, nothing was ever wasted. For example, sinew was turned into cord lashings; hides turned into clothing; brains were used to cure and tan the hides; hooves, antlers, and horns were used to make buttons, buckles, beverage containers, and gun powder; just to name a few.

Cotton, on the other hand, was a rarity in Europe. Therefore, cotton was not a common fiber used in weaving fabric at the time. Cotton was only affordable by the very wealthy once trade routes were opened.

Men’s Renaissance Doublets

Men wore doublets garment from the 13th to 17th-century in Europe. They were jacket tops with snug-fitting waist, padded shoulders and padded chest, and attached knee-length skirts. They closed with buttons or lacing down the front.

Originally it was worn under a pourpoint. As fashion changed for men, the skirt portion of the doublet got shorter and shorter. Doublets were then worn over tight-fitted, long sleeve cotte tunics as undershirts and with tights and later hosiery. If they wore any pants at all the breeches were very short balloon-shaped trousers. Eventually, as the doublet skirts got shorter, the trousers became longer knee-length pants.

It is inspired by an aristocrats fashion design with the embroidered band trim. Wear it with a pair of brown tights and a pair of knee-high boots. Add a sword belt and sword an you’ll look fabulous!

These doublets are more of a middle-class style as they are more elaborate than a jerkin worn by a peasant (see below). The doublets featured above are from Faireware. They are reversible so it is like getting two for the price of one. There are 7 color combinations available (2 shown above) which translates to 14 different colors.

I consider this Renaissance sleeveless shirt vest to be quite fashionable. It’s a reasonably priced vest that will get many uses for a variety of different costume characters. For example, an elf or woodland sprite, Robin Hood, a huntsmen, a Medieval archer, or pirate costume. It could even be worn with harem pants to play the part of an Ottoman palace slave!

Men’s Medieval Renaissance Peasant Collarless Tunic Shirts

The way a peasant or a commoner dressed from the 5th-century to the 18th-century was layered similar to a modern-day man, however, the shirts usually lacked a collar and cuffs. The outfit would start with either a collarless tunic or a shirt with a banded collar. The next layer consisted of a jerkin vest, a doublet, a gambeson, or a fitted over-shirt. The last layer was usually a close-fitting jacket and then a cloak if he was traveling.

Tunics a little fancier than most peasant farmers would have worn because of the rich fabric used to create them. One of the tunics has a frog closures that only a noble could afford, but they are great shirts to wear to a Renaissance Faire, an LARP event, a Pirate Fest, a RPG event, or as a Halloween costume!

Included with the tunic above left is a black cotton cord belt. Leave the belt plain if going for a peasant look. If going for the look of a merchant or noble, add some fancy beads to the ends of the cords for something a little more ornate.

The belt is not included with the tunic featured above right. Look for a substitute leather Renaissance belt by clicking the link.

Wear the peasant shirt during the summer under a jerkin or alone. Pair it with peasant pants or a Sottish kilt. A little know fact about buttons during the Middle Ages is that they were used more as decoration until the middle of the 11th-century when they became clothing fastenings. By the 12th-century clothing for the wealthy had become fitted with the buttons placed for a snug fit.

Mytholon Ansgar Shirt Size ChartDesigned in Germany and handmade in Pakistan from the Mytholon design patterns, two of these Renaissance laced-up neckline shirts are beautifully constructed from quality medium-weight cotton. The shirts are better suited for cooler climates. They will be rather warm if worn to a hot summer festival where you’re prone to being outdoors in the heat all day. With that being said they will absorb perspiration.

The handmade linen shirt is a linen-cotton blend that is much better suited to hot summer days. The fabric has both cooling and sweat-absorbing properties making it much more comfortable in the summer.

The shirts have ample fabric gathered at the yoke of the shirt to add fullness with a nice drape over the chest and straight cut hems. The sleeves have a full wide-cut stemming from the shoulder down to a wide cuff band with two-ties in grommet closures.

Order a size down as they are larger than US sizes with lots of extra room. Use the size chart featured to your left to figure the size that is best for you. The measurements are in centimeters, not inches.

Mythalon Bastian Shirt Size ChartThe Mytholon Renaissance Costume Company is out of Germany. They have been designing costumes for European Renaissance Faires for almost 25 years; since 1996. They design their costumes in Germany and send the patterns to Pakistan where they are handmade.

Mytholon has its shirts made with ample high-quality cotton fabric giving lots of room for movement. Be prepared to order a size or two smaller than what your clothing size is because their sizing is larger than US sizing.

I recommend ordering by your measurements from the chart pictured to your left. Don’t go by the Amazon sizing chart or by your regular clothing size.

These shirts are well suited for larger men because of the ample fabric. I do not recommend these shirts for men who usually wear a size small as they will overwhelm you with fabric.

These historically correct shirts have ruffled banded collars with cotton tie lacing closures at the neckline and on the ruffled cuffs at the wrist. The roomy, billowy shirts are excellent worn under a jerkin or a vest. The cotton fabric will absorb your perspiration during the summer months and are a nice weight for chillier climates too.

The belts featured in the photos are not included.

Mytholon Alex Shirt Size ChartThe “Alex” poet shirt has a historically accurate appearance with decorative lacing down the sides of the full billowy sleeves. A standing banded collar, as well as a lacing at the neck opening, making it an ideal Renaissance costume top for larger men from Mytholon.

The shirts are very full with more than ample cotton fabric to cover you. Order a size smaller than your normal shirt size as the shirts are made larger than US costume shirt sizes.

I recommend using the Mytholon size chart featured in the image to your left for the correct sizing. The measurements are in centimeters. Don’t use Amazon’s size chart.

If you normally wear a men’s size small, I do not recommend these shirts for you. You will be swimming in a sea of fabric.

The high-quality cotton shirts are handmade in Pakistan from Mytholon’s German design patterns. They have been in the European Renaissance Faire Costume business for almost 25 years.

In Scotland, a Ghillie shirt is often called a Jacobean or Jacobite shirt. In Ireland they are called Grandfather shirts. A Ghillie is the criss-crossed rawhide leather lacing at the neck opening of the shirt. Ghillie shirts are the traditional casual versions of shirts worn with a kilt. Usually a formal tuxedo shirt and waist-coat are worn.

Traditionally, Ghillie shirts are worn to dances or ceilidhs because the full lightweight cotton shirts allow for airflow keeping the skin fairly cool when dancing. In the photo (shown above) this Scot groom is wearing casual wedding attire to his wedding. His outfit consists of a Ghillie shirt with the traditional kilt instead of the more formal waist-coat and tuxedo shirt. The shirt is now available in 5 colors, including the white shirt I have featured above.

Ruche the sleeves up on hot summer days. For cooler temperatures, or to change the look, leave them down and puff them out at the lacings for a noblemen’s shirt.

Men’s Renaissance Noblemen Fancy
Long Sleeve Dress Shirts

During the Renaissance period, this next group of fancy, formal, long sleeve shirts were only worn by noblemen; men of higher social standing, or royalty; and musketeers, cavaliers swordsmen, and privateers. The commoners could not afford such finery as expensive fine fabrics, lace, or fine hand-stitched embroidery. The styles were much more elaborate and flamboyant that most men wear today. Billowy shirts with ruffles and lace at the open necklines and at the wrists were quite common among the noble class, although some men were just as likely to wear tight-fitting cotehardies under heavy fur tabards or elaborate brocade doublets crested with jewels.

Keep in mind the shirts are costume shirts. Costumes are sized differently from regular clothing sizes. These shirts are tailored for a slim fit and they are made overseas. Overseas sizing is usually smaller than US sizes. Be prepared to order one or two sizes larger than your regular shirt size.

I recommend going by the vendors sizing chart and not Amazon’s sizing chart. Order according to your measurements and not by your clothing size. These shirts will NOT accomodate plus size or overweight men. They are a slim fit!

Men’s European “Landsknecht” Style
Cavalier Renaissance Shirts

Renaissance ‘Landsknecht’ were German mercenary pikeman foot soldiers who wore colorful outfits during the late 15th and early 16th century in Europe. The Landsknecht dressed in elaborate outfits which they adopted from the Swiss. They deliberately slashed through the cloth of their clothing to reveal the contrasting colorful fabric of their undershirts. The fabric of their undershirts were pulled through the slit designs to form puffs, hence puffed and slashed. Their outfits also included particoloured hose; doublets; broad flat beret-style hats with tall feather plumes; and broad flat shoes.

Men’s 15th-Century Arming Doublets

During the 15th-century, doublets were beginning their climb on the men’s stairs of social status as the trendy men’s wear of the day. Swordsmen, gaurds and knights wore arming doublets for protectin in battle while noblemen, who had never been to war, donned civil doublets to enhance their self-esteem and to appear to be more masculine and virile, therefore attactive, to the ladies at court.

Often noblemen wore gambeson doublets under their tunics or tabards as protection against would-be assassins. In addition, children, young boys specifically, also wore doublets both alone as a fashionable piece or hidden under a shirt or tabard for protection as we would wear a bulletproof vest today.

Adult Medieval Gambeson Aketon Doublet Armor Vests

A gambeson, or an aketon, is a quilted padded vest, doublet, or defensive jacket worn during the Middle Ages. They were worn alone for warmth during the winter season and they were worn as arming garments.
Warriors combined these padded tops made from linen and wool with chainmail or plate armor when going into battle.

In the late fifteenth century Italy, these padded, quilted vests and jackets also became a fashion statement for civilian men. These men were not knights or King’s guards. They were noblemen who wore gambeson doublets as a sign of status and chivalry fashion statements. The fashion style spilled over into the English and French courts as well.
