Featuring musketeer, swordsmen, and cavalier Renaissance costumes for men. Additionaly, featuring Musketeer leather accessories and weapons to complete the look of the costumes.

Musketeer of the Guard

The French Renaissance Musketeer of the Guard began in 1622 in France as a military branch of the Royal Household, or Maison du Roi. Their name stemmed from the weapons they were outfitted with, namely the musket.

The Musketeers started out serving the lower noble families as protectors and fought their way up the ranks. Their high esprit de corps gained the Musketeers royal favor to later become the personal King’s Guards to King Louis XIII. The King’s guards within the royal residences were the Garde du Corps and the Gardes Suisse (Swiss Guard) had the primary duties of protecting the castle doors, gates and outer perimeters of the various royal palaces.

The Gardes Suisse Musketeers

The Gardes Suisse Musketeers were Swiss musketeer mercenaries hired to help guard the King of France. They served at the French court from 1490 to 1817. The Swiss had their own King’s Guard Musketeers, who were similar to the French. The Swiss crown was only too happy to rent out their musketeers to guard the French King. Additionally, they send their colorful Swiss pike soldiers to help fight French battles.

Guards of Cardinal Richelieu

Shortly after the first Musketeers began guarding the Kings household, there was a second group of swordsmen formed to report solely to Cardinal Richelieu. Cardinal Richelieu was appointed as King Louis XIII’s chief minister in 1624 and was a highly skilled politician. Without going into a long history lesson, let’s just say Richelieu was quite the colorful, underhanded, sly fox of a character who you either hated or loved. There was no in-between.

The Musketeers were constantly battling the crimson-clad Cardinal’s Guards with an on-going rivalry. The Musketeers were honorable and the Cardinal’s Guards, not so much.

Musketeers Code of Conduct

The Musketeers lived by a code of conduct similar to the knight’s code of conduct. They were known for having the finest qualities in all men; honor, loyalty, gallantry, bravery, and chivalry.

The most famous of historical Musketeers is probably the four (yes there were four) Musketeers from Alexandre Dumas’ novel, The Three Musketeers. The novel took place during the Renaissance Era of 17th-century France. Aramis, Athos, Porthos, and D’Artagnan, are the inseparable friends who live by the motto “Tous Pour un, un Pour Tous”, One for All and All for One.

Men’s Deluxe High-Quality Blue
Musketeer Costumes

The King’s Guard Musketeers of the French Court wore blue and white or blue and silver uniforms. They were selected from the ranks of the king’s soldiers to serve as protectors to the king and his family. They acted as a combination of personal guard, secret service, and special forces. This was no small task as frequent plots and conspiracies were continuously in the making, during this time in French history.

A French Renaissance Musketeers of the Guard will need a pair of gaunlet gloves to wear with his Musketeer uniform. Blue or black leather are both appropriate accessories for the swordsmen. The gloves I am featuring here are genuine sheepskin leather. Sheepskin is usually a much softer, therefore more comfortable, leather than cow hide.

This is a quality Renaissance Musketeer swordmen costume that will have you ready for Renaissance fairs, cosplay events, or Halloween parties. Included with this outfit is a blue velvet tunic with an attached red satin lined cape ,all trmmed in silver; a matching blue velvet hat also accented with silver trim; a pair of blue baggy swordsmen pants; and black vintl boot tops.

As you probably know by now, if you have been following the costumes on this site at all, I am NOT a big fan of boot tops. I think they cheapen the look of the costume making the costume look cheesy. Personally, I think they are cheap and tacky looking. Instead, I recommend wearing a pair of real thigh-high boots that fold over at the knee as an alternative.

Where Do I Find Musketeer Boots?

Find cool looking boots by clicking on this page link, or this one here.

If you are planning on using the costume for just a one time Halloween party, the boot covers may work for you. But if you are planning to use the costume for a Renaissance Fair, a cosplay event, an RPG or an LARP event, then I would highly recommend wearing a real pair of boots.

Men’s Deluxe High-Quality Red
Musketeer Costumes

The first red Muskeeter uniforms belonged on the papal guardsmen of Cardinal Richelieu when he was appointed Chief Minister to King Louis XIII in 1624. Cardinal Richelieu preferred the color red as the essential color of his guards; red being the color only allowed to be worn by the monarchy and the papistry, according to the French Sumptuary Laws of the day, henceforth, a subtlely bold way of saying the papistry ranked higher above the blue of the King’s guard. Swiss Musketeers also wore red uniforms.

The scarlet Musketeer cassock uniform was adopted in 1677. This scarlet Muskateer uniform costume is a rich red velvet, lined with silver satin, accented with a silver and gold cross applique, trimmed with silver metallic braid, and gold metal buttons. Included with the costume are matching red velvet knee breeches with seam pockets. The hat, hose, shoes and sword are not included, but may be purchased separately.

I recommend wearing a cavalier hat with this costume. The tri-corner hat doesn’t seem as well suited with a cavalier outfit. I think a tri-corner hat is better suited to wear with an American colonial costume or a pirate costume.

French Renaissance Musketeer Red Velvet Tabard

French Renaissance Musketeer Red Velvet TabardFrench Renaissance Musketeer Red Velvet TabardClick for Details on Amazon

A luxury cotton velvet scarlet tabard, fully lined with matching red satin. The front of the tunic is embellished with a gold satin fleur-de-Lis cross and is edged with gold trim. I recommend wearing the tabard with a pair of black swordsmen breeches, a pair of thigh-high boots in black or brown, and a fancy white Renaissance shirt underneath. I would add a cavalier hat, a rapier, a small swordsmen dagger, along with a leather belt and baltric to complete the costume.

Italian CavalierAlthough each country had their own musketeer swordsmen fighting their causes, each country also had different fashion styles for their swordsmen. Most people are more familiar with the French Musketeers who wore the blue cloak-like cassocks, lined with red and edged with silver embroidery. These were later replaced with the smaller soubrevestes or sleeveless coats bearing the silver Fleur-de-Lis cross on the front of the garment. These tunics have become the most popular with today’s costumers designing French Musketeer costumes.

In this image to the right is an Italian Cavalier who, as you can see, is dressed altogether different than a French Musketeer. This Italian swordsman is wearing a doublet over a billowy shirt with paned sleeves, black hose (tights) and thigh-high boots.

His sword would be carried in a leather sheath attached to his leather belt with a very long tongue and on his head is a cavalier hat with a large plume feather. It is an easy costume to put together yourself. I would add a short cape or a long cloak to complete the costume.

In The Musketeers BBC series, it’s all about the hats worn by the Musketeers. Each Musketeer has a hat matching the character of the person wearing it. All except D’ Artagnan, who as a novice, young knave aspiring to become a Muskateer, doesn’t have a hat at all.

Athos wears a brown hat with a slightly turned up brim and small feathers (shown above) tucked into the hatband. It is difficult to tell if the hat is made out of leather or wool felt and I couldn’t find any information about the making of their hats on the Internet. I think they are probably leather, but like I said it’s hard to tell.

The hats I selected for Athos are both high-quality hats. They can be shaped into the style you want to play the Athos musketeer character. They are both really really excellent hats! One is made in America of leather, and the other is made in America of wool. Either one will make an excellent accessory to complete your Athos costume. I recommend changing the hatband, tucking in a few black feathers, and shaping the hat to turn up slightly on the left side.

I couldn’t find a gray leather hat for Aramis, but I don’t think he is wearing a leather hat anyway. In all of the photos I looked at, it appears to be a gray wool felt hat with a brown band.

I did find a bunch of wool hats in gray and narrowed them down to these two (shown above). If you do choose to wear one of them as Aramis, remember to change the hatband.

I recommend replacing the black hat band with a wrapped brown band. Add a few brown chicken feathers, a couple of black goose feathers, and two long pheasant tail feathers.

Once the feathers are glued into place, turn up the left side brim of the hat and pin it to the hat crown.

Two black leather and one wool wide brim hats for Porthos character. In the series, Porthos hat is the most extragant of all the Musketeers. His hat is a large wide brim leather hat pinned up on the side with a fluer-de-lis pin accessorizing the hat. Anyone of these hats will work well for the Porthos costume.

Men’s Musketeer Musket & Pistol Weapons

The reason for the name Musketeers is because of the musket weapons used by the King’s guards at the time. Muskets came into use in the early 1600s from Suhl, Germany right about the time Cardinal Richelieu was appointed Chief Minister to King Louis XIII.

They were brought to France by the Swiss mercenaries and the Musketeers armed themselves with….well, muskets. Imagine that. They armed themselves with muskets, blunderbusses, swords, and naturally…. knives. I mean after all, what well-serving guard wouldn’t carry a concealed knife or two or three?

This video shows the types of weapons using in the filming of the popular BBC series. Starting at 2:35 on this video are the secrets to the types of weapons used during the filming of the live-action film series. Fast forward to that time if you don’t want to waste your time on women’s costume dialogue.

I wasn’t able to locate any 17th-century musket blunderbuss replicas, but these replicated flintlock pirate blunderbuss muskets from the 1800s aren’t much different from a 17th-century blunderbuss. BTW – The reason for the left handed pistol was not to accommodated left handed men. They were made to hold with the left hand, fill with powder and ball with the right hand, then fire while wielding a sword with the right hand.

They are swords that can cause bodily harm and damage if not used responsibly. Only use them for cosplay costume props with care.
