Men's Pirate Shirts & VestsMen’s Pirate Shirts & Vests

Arrh Matey! We have men’s pirate shirts in many varieties, styles, and fabrics for every pirate, privateer, and buccaneer ready to go to sea on his next adventure. We have pirate shirts that will cover men from the lowest scurvy bilge rat all the way up to the fancy aristocrat admiral privateer.

We love to put together our own pirate costumes by using separate pirate shirt, pirate pants, and other pirate accessories we have either purchased or made ourselves. We like being DIY, semi-homemade, kinda people who love to haunt the thrift stores, craft stores, antique shops, and garage sales looking for that perfect piece to use in one of our costumes.

I like to look for pieces I can put together to create my own idea of a what the costume should look like for a particular period of time in history. Pirate costumes are no exception. I would rather buy a well-made seamen or captain’s pirate shirt than try to make one, as I am not that talented when it comes to sewing. I have been known to sew something when I have the time, but I am best at only sewing simple pieces, not something intricate. I would rather buy one that is already made exactly how I WANT IT, and made well, cut from quality fabric.

When I search for a pirate shirt to feature on this page, I search for shirts either we already have in our costume wardrobe so that we can review them properly, or I look for a pirate shirt we would buy ourselves, to add to what we already have. We first look for the style of shirt we want, then we look for the best quality at the best price to make it easier for you. It saves you a ton of search time since you don’t have to waste your time doing it on your own!

Pirate shirts are all very similar in style, with just a few slight nuances. The differences may be in the shirt collar, or lack of one; in the yoke of the shirt, or lack of one; in the type of sleeve cuffs, or the lack of cuffs altogether; or in the cut of the shirt’s hemline. The pirate shirts worn by the men were, of course, the same shirts worn by both peasants and aristocrats in the same period of history. The only difference is some men chose to stay on land and some went to sea to find adventure, fortune, and fame.

If you don’t find a shirt here that you like, be sure to check out our Men’s Renaissance Tunics, Shirts, and Vests page. We didn’t want to duplicate the same shirts on both pages, however, many of the peasant shirts and the aristocrat shirts found on that page will make awesome pirate shirts for your homemade pirate costume.

Men’s Sleeveless Pirate Shirts

There are several uses for sleeveless pirate shirts. The obvious is to play the part of a buccaneer by wearing it alone. Pair it with drawstring button cuff pirate pants tucked into a great pair of awesome pirate boots with a sabre at your side. Don’t forget to tie a bandana around your head.

Wear Medieval sleeveless shirts under heavy pirate coats when added warmth isn’t needed or layered over a long sleeve tunic when extra warmth is needed. They also work well under form fitting coats when you don’t want extra bulk.

These collarless pirate shirts are named after Redbeard, a Barbary pirate, whose real name was Khair-ed-Din. Aso known as Hayreddin Barbarossa, Redbeard thieved, pillaged and plundered his way up the pirate ladder to eventually become the ruler of Algiers, and later the Chief Admiral of the Ottoman Turkish Navy under Suleiman the Magnificent. This was a case in history when crime really did pay. Whoot!

Just like the beautiful colors in the Mediterranean ocean, where Redbeard learned to sail as a child, these thick and rich viscose rayon pirate shirts come in beautiful, vibrant colors. They are collarless with front lacings, typical of pirate shirts in the day, making them cooler to wear during the summer heat. The long sleeves are banded at the cuffs with small ruffle trim. Keep in mind that colors may be different than what you see on the computer screen. For example, the green shirt is darker than what you see on the screen. Fabric dye lots can also change from batch to batch.

They are very full, roomy shirts, made with ample fabric so you may want to order a size smaller than what you normally wear. Because these men’s pirate shirts are accurate reproductions, they can also be worn with a colonial costume; a pirate or buccaneer costume; a Steampunk or Diesel Punk costume; and a Medieval or Renaissance costume. Wear them under a naval officer’s coat or a Captain’s pirate coat.

Not much is known about the early life of Captain John Coxon. We do know he was a buccaneer who made his first showing in recorded history during the later part of the 1600s, in the company of other English buccaneers. He is acclaimed for one of the most famous of the Brethren of the Coast who terrorized the Spanish Main and for the kidnapping of Santa Marta’s Governor and Bishop.

Coxon later joined other privateers and traveled under the guise of a French Letter of Marque. A Letter of Marque is a government license authorizing a privateer to attack, pillage, plunder, and capture enemy vessels. In other words, it was a license to legally steal. Coxon and his crew overtook a Spanish fleet marking this act as one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of buccaneers.

Fashioned after Captain John Coxon, these historically accurate pirate shirts are designed with banded collars and lacings with grommet eyelets from the neck part-way down the front of the shirt. The sleeve cuffs are also laced. It’s a finely made shirt of Viscose Rayon (a renewable resource material) that is soft with a perfect drape and breathes wonderfully in warm weather; just like cotton. The design of the shirts in this collection are a little different from the Privateer Pirate shirts feature above.

  • First of all, they have gathered yokes at the shoulders of the shirt for a better drape effect.
  • Secondly, the cuffs are fitted from the elbow to the wrist allowing the sleeves to hang, giving them a better poof effect.

The shirts will arrive folded in a package and will have some wrinkles when removed from the packing. Give it a little pressing or steaming to take care of them.

What sets these Cap’n Quincy pirate shirts apart from the other banded collar pirate shirts is the fabric and the cut of the sleeve. The sleeves are a wide bell sleeve; tapering from the shoulder to between the elbow and the wrist in a wide bell shape, then gathered and attached to the sleeve cuff. The 5-button cuffs are fitted to the arm below the elbow to the wrist. This allows the fabric of the sleeves to fall freely giving the sleeves a very nice fluffy poof above the cuff.

The design of the shirt is historically correct, however, the fabric is not. Rayon viscose is a man-made fiber, but it is not synthetic. It is made from the cellulose in the wood pulp that these days comes mostly from sustainable bamboo, giving it a soft silky feel. The truth is that cotton is not historically correct for the Medieval or Renaissance period in Europe, either. Linen, made from flax, was the most common fabric used in Europe at that time.

A cotton muslin men’s pirate shirt made as an exact replica of the shirt worn by Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Carribean is also an historically accurate pirate shirt from the late 17th century. Wear it under a replicated Jack Sparrow vest and coat, add a pair of buccaneer trousers, a real leather Jack Sparrow tricorn pirate hat and an awesome pair of fold over knee high pirate boots. Adding dreadlocks, a shrunken head, jewelry, feathers, sashes, leather belts, leather pouches, and pirate weapons are the acccessories that will make or break a Jack Sparrow costume. Remember, when Jack Sparrow wore this shirt he never buttoned his sleeves. They were always left open.

Made from high-quality, grown in the USA, pima cotton fabric, you will love the quality of these men’s pirate shirts! They are cut with extra fabric to give you lots of room. They do run large so I recommend getting a size or two smaller than what you usually wear. The shirts are all historically accurate without the use of metal grommets. The ties of the fold-down collars are made from the same matching fabric. The color dyes are earthy colors that would have been made by vegetable dyes in the late 1600s to the 1700s.

Captain Blackbeard Men’s Pirate Shirts

The Blackbeard pirate shirt is just a wee bit different from the Captain Morgan pirate shirts featured above. It is the same high-quality, grown in America, pima cotton with the same extra fabric roominess, and the same fold down collar with lacings at the neck opening. The variation is that the Blackbeard shirt has a yoke pattern piece at the chestline, where the Captain Morgan shirt is a solid piece of fabric, draping from the top of the shoulder. The Captain Morgan shirt doesn’t have the extra yoke pattern piece at the chest line.

The yoke piece of this shirt doesn’t stop at the armhole like many shirts will. It extends over the shoulder and down the arm just a tad. The shirt fabric has also been gathered in the front where it attaches to the yoke of the shirt and is also gathered at the sleeve seam of the yoke. The gathered fabric gives the shirt extra fullness and turns the shirt sleeves into more of a mutton leg sleeve style than the bell sleeve of the Morgan shirt. The shirt is available in 2 more colors (see directly below).

Men’s Ruffled Cuff Pirate Shirts

These next sets of pirate shirts have a slight change from the previous shirts. They are getting a little fancier as they have double ruffled sleeve cuffs instead of the banded cuffs of the previous shirts and they are made of viscose rayon. This rayon looks, acts and washes like cotton, but drapes and steams much nicer. Viscose rayon is a manmade fabric, these days usually made from bamboo wood pulp which is a sustainable wood. Clothing made from bamboo viscose rayon fabric have a light silky feel to them. The collars are turn down collars and the neck opening laces up, typical of the style of the 16th and 17th century.

Captain John Cooke had a short life as a Captain of pirate ships. There isn’t a lot written about him in history. We know he started out as a merchant Captain but had to abandon his ship on the island of Bonaire to escape the Spaniards. He became a buccaneer crew member for Bartholomew Sharpe until 1681 when he broke away and joined French Captain Jean Tristan, under whose command he captured two ships. One he kept and renamed the “Revenge”. By 1683 he had a crew of more than 70 men when he captured a large Danish ship which he renamed the “Bachelor’s Delight”. Captain John Cook died of an unknown sickness aboard his ship, the Bachelor’s Delight, in the Gulf of Nicoya near Cape Blanco, July 1684.

Captain Charles Vane is a famous pirate from the early 1700s who has gained popularity over the last couple of years because of the STARZ television series, “Black Sails”, in which Captain Vane is one of the main characters based loosely on the historical fact.

Similar to the Tortuga Caribbean style shirts featured above, the Charles Vane pirate shirt has double ruffles around the front lacings and at the sleeve cuffs, they are just not as elaborate as the Tortuga shirts. These cotton Captain Vane pirate shirts are only available in black and white, however, the shirts made of rayon viscose are available in 8 colors (see below).

Francis Drake Privateer Men’s Pirate Shirts

Sir Francis Drake was a famous privateer commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I to raid England’s enemy ships. He was also a navigator, slave trader, politician and civil engineer of the Elizabethan era for the Queen. He circumnavigated the world in 1577 and in 1580 he took part in the war with the Spanish Armada of 1588. Queen Elizabeth I awarded him a knighthood.

Now there is only one thing that sets the Sir Francis Drake pirate shirt apart from the other ruffled pirate shirts. The neck opening and the sleeves only have single ruffle accents instead of the double ruffles some of the other shirts have and it is made from Rayon Viscose and not cotton, but that is not the difference. The difference is that these men’s pirate shirts have an extra layer of ruffle frill attached to the front shoulder seams. These historical pirate shirts were designed in a style that was very similar to doublets worn by Sir Drake in the 1500s.

Men’s Pirate Shirts with Elastic Cuff Openings

Theatrical pirate shirts from Faireware are made in the USA from a cotton-poly blend broadcloth which means they are easy care and durable shirts which can be washed multiple times to use again and again for your costume venues. The shirts are cut roomy so that they have gathers when worn outside the pants and belted. You may need to order a smaller size than usual because of the extra fabric used in their construction. The collars are fold down collars and the neck opening has laces.

These pivateer pirate shirts are also made of quality cotton. The difference in these pirate shirts are the lacing ties that close the neck opening are made of the same cotton fabric as the shirt. Sometimes I like these types of ties better as they stay tied when tied into a bow, however, they tend to wear out and break faster with repeated use. I then usually replace them with rawhide laces. I do the same to shirt lacings that are made out of nylon because they don’t stay tied and they are not historically accurate.

The shirt sleeves are also different. They do not have cuffs that need to be laced. Instead, they have elastic in the sleeves for easy fit and comfort. Not exactly historically accurate, but a well-made cotton shirt that will withstand multiple washings.

Bully Hayes was an American pirate captain in the mid-1800s. His ships were involved in black-birding, which is the same as shanghaiing, except, whereas shanghaiing is kidnapping for crew members, black-birding is kidnapping for slaves to work the plantations.

As fashion trendy as this shirt looks, it is a style worn during the Renaissance era through to the 19th century. The shirt comes with eyelets & drawstring from neck to hem down the front and on the sleeves. This will give you the control of a variety of options for sleeve tightness and length which allows you to look and relax the way you want. It is made of rayon viscose and is machine washable for many future wearings. It is available in 4 more colors.

Avast thar matey! Shiver me timbers! Made for the aristocrat pirate, wear these ruffled lace shirts under an aristocratic Captain’s Pirate Coat with the lace ruffles peaking out at the throat.

I think this is a gorgeous shirt for any sea captain to wear. It is made of Viscose Rayon fabric. This relatively new fabric feels like soft cotton and breathes like cotton. It is, however, made from sustainable fibers. It is made mostly of bamboo fibers. This is an excellent shirt for any sea captain or well-dressed pirate such as Charles Vane.

Charles Vane was an English pirate active in the 18th century during the “Golden Years of Piracy”. At times, he was a very well dressed sea captain but could be cruel to his captured prisoners. At other times, he worked alongside his crew with ruffles removed in a plain fold down collar shirt.

With the detachable lacy front ruffles removed and you have a more relaxed, down-to-earth, loop and button, rayon viscos pirate shirt fit for any swashbucklin’ pirate. Wear it under a 1700s style pirate vest.

In the early 1800s, Pirate Captain Robert Cofresi was considered to be the Robin Hood of the Caribbean as he held the philosophy that one should rob from the rich to give to the poor. Based out of Puerto Rico, he was called “El Pirata Cofresi” and was the most reknowned pirate of that area. He has inspired many legendary poems, songs, books, plays, and films about his life as a pirate, especially in Puerto Rico.

Now, costumes are being inspired by this legendary character, and this gorgeous pirate shirt is just one of them. The ruffles on this shirt are accented with lace making this pirate shirt perfect for an aristocratic pirate captain costume.

A beautifully made black aristocrat privateer shirt. The shirt has a jabot style neckline with three rows of lace trimmed ruffles. The shirt is tailored for a snug fit. Be sure to follow the manufacturers size chart and not the Amazon size chart, or the shirt you order will be too small. If your waist is larger than your chest do NOT order this shirt as it will be too tight in the waist.

Men’s Satin Aristocrat Pirate Shirts

Even a ship’s Captain is allowed to dress up like an aristocrat to go to shore and party hardy! These next pirate shirts are fancy satin Renaissance style aristocrat shirts. Wealthy men wore these style shirts from the Renaissance through the Rococco period and into the Victorian era. You will be able to wear these shirts for many different timelines in history. They are excellent choices for Steampunk, Vampire, and Gothic costumes as well.

Satin and sateen acetate fabrics are easily creased and wrinkled from packing. I recommend pressing or steaming after removing from the shipping packaging. As you can see in the photos above, the black shirt on the lefthas not been pressed and looks horrid. Additionally, the red shirt on the right has been pressed and look so much better!

Sriped Deckhand Pirate Shirts

The easiest costume in the world to create quickly is a that of a pirate deckhand or cabin boy. All you need is a striped t-shirt and a pair of scruffy, tattered pants found at a thrift shop, or a pair of historically accurate pants.

Add a couple of sashes, a bandana, or a head scarf for your head and tie a long sash made from several yards of scrap fabric around your waist. Perhaps you’d like to wear a an eye patch, too?

For your feet, a pair of knee-high pirate boots are a good thing but not necessary for a deckhand. A pair of rope sandals or bare feet are fine.

Extra pieces you may want to wear for added detail are a leather baltic belt across your shoulder with a pistol or cutlass in your hand. Easy peasy pirate cabin boy costume!

I have selected several different striped t-shirts to chose from to make your deckhand pirate costume.

A versatile black cotton velvet vest with military style trim which can be worn under any pirate coat. Or wear it alone over your choice of a pirate shirt featured on this page like the model has done in the photo above. The well made black velvet vest is accented with gold lace braid trim and Bshiny brass buttons. The larger sizes sell out quite often. If they come back again I will add them back in, but for now, they are not available.

Men’s Red Cotton & Gold Trim Pirate Captain Vest

A red cotton Captain’s pirate vest accented with gold metallic braid trim. This style vest is a reproduction from the medieval period. The gold metallic trim is the give-away that it was not made for a servant, or ship’s crew member. A peasant vest would not be red in color nor would it have the gold trim. Red was usually, by law, only worn by royals. The Captain wearing this vest would have had to have either liberated it from another ship’s treasure or once been a noble turned privateer turned pirate Captain.

A typical tapered vest worn by nobles at the end of the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance period. The doublet style vests kept growing more elaborate and decorative when worn by the higher classes. It is perfectly fine for a pirate to wear it without a shirt and just a pair of pirate trousers (I’m thinking tight red & black stripes), a sash around the waist, pirate boots and wide leather belts with ornate belt buckles and weapons of choice. Be sure to wear a head scarf or a bandana on your head to complete the look of the swarthy buccaneer. Saavy? Another option is to dress it up by wearing it over a pirate peasant shirt and under a coat.

Medieval High-Quality Cotton Velvet Front Laced Tunic Pirate Vests

Medieval High-Quality Green Cotton Velvet Pirate VestMedieval High-Quality Green Cotton Velvet Pirate VestClick Here for Details

The high-quality cotton velvet fabric of these tunic style pirate vests make them something a middle class nobleman would have worn in the 15th and 16th century. A pirate Captain, his first mate and a quarter-master would be comfortable wearing these tunics out at sea, but they would be too high-class for a scurvey, bilge rat, deck hand. Unless they had stolen them, of course.

Wear one of these tunics alone or dress it up over a full sleeve, pirate shirt. Lace it up in the front for a perfect fit.

These prirate vests are excellent choices to wear with a Captain Blackbeard costume. They are well made from quality fabric. They will look fabulous when worn under any pirate Captain coat.

Captain Jack Sparrow Pirate Waistcoats

I selected a couple of different style vests from the Captain Jack Sparrow costumes worn in the 5 Pirates of the Caribbean films. He is almost always seen in the blue linen waistcoat. In the films On Stranger Tides and Deadmen Tell No Tales he is seen wearing the brocade waiscoat. You decide which one you want to wear.

A classic black vest never goes out of style. A classic leather vest can be worn alone with a pair of tight-fitting black pants, and a pair of black pirate boots for a simple, but classically hot swashbuckling pirate costume! A black bandana, a wide black leather belt, a couple of replicated pistols (to stick inside the belt band) and a rapier are all that is needed to complete an excellent and sexy men’s pirate costume. I would be sure to wear an earring too.
